Macron Says US No Longer Seen as Fully Reliable Ally Europe

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron has said that European allies are increasingly uncertain about the reliability of the United States as a strategic partner.

Speaking at an informal gathering in Athens alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Macron addressed concerns over Europe’s global relevance amid multiple international conflicts, including the war involving Iran.

He stated that while the United States remains a major global power and a potential ally for some countries, confidence in its long-term dependability is weakening. “Everybody sees that the number one power, the US, could be an ally for certain countries, but this ally is not so much certain... and nobody is totally sure if this alliance is reliable,” he said, adding that this situation positions the European Union as a potentially more stable alternative.

Macron also argued that the global system is becoming increasingly unstable due to the actions of major powers, saying, “We used to live in an international order, and this international order is jeopardized by the two big powers.”

The comments come amid rising tensions between European NATO members and Washington, particularly following disagreements over military involvement in the Iran conflict and differing approaches to the war in Ukraine.

Recent months have also seen disputes over burden-sharing within NATO, with calls from Washington for European countries to increase their financial and military contributions. At the same time, diplomatic differences over how to resolve the Ukraine conflict have further strained transatlantic relations.

The evolving situation reflects broader uncertainty within Western alliances, as debates continue over strategy, security commitments, and the future balance of power in global affairs.
