US VP Says No Agreement Reached as US-Iran Talks End in Islamabad
Vance reportedly told journalists that talks had lasted roughly 21 hours and included what he described as substantive exchanges. However, he added that no final agreement had been reached, which he characterized as more problematic for Iran than for the United States.
According to reports, he said that Iranian negotiators had “chosen not to accept our terms,” suggesting that differences remained unresolved at the conclusion of the discussions.
He also stated that Washington had not observed what it considers a long-term Iranian commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons development, emphasizing that the concern extends beyond short-term assurances.
Vance further explained that the central question for the US side was whether there is a sustained and fundamental commitment from Iran not to develop nuclear weapons “not just now, not just two years from now, but for the long term,” adding that such assurance had not yet been demonstrated.
Reports indicate that he ended the press briefing abruptly, leaving without responding to further questions, including those related to the Strait of Hormuz and whether the stalled talks could lead to renewed conflict.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported that both sides had agreed to continue discussions with another round of talks in Pakistan, following a proposal put forward by Pakistani mediators.
