Germany’s Business Sentiment Weakens
The Ifo Institute for Economic Research released on Wednesday the findings of its June Business Climate Index survey, which surveyed around 9,000 firms.
The report indicated that the Business Climate Index for industry and trade, previously revised down to 88 points in November, fell further to 87.6 points this month. Analysts had anticipated a rise to 88.2 points.
Meanwhile, Germany’s Ifo Expectations Index fell from 90.5 to 89.7 points, whereas the Current Situation Index remained steady at 85.6.
The institute commented that businesses are increasingly pessimistic about the first half of 2026, while their evaluation of the current situation stayed unchanged, suggesting that the year is concluding without any optimism.
Confidence in Germany’s manufacturing sector also weakened, with new orders decreasing and firms planning to reduce production.
"In the service sector, the business climate has fallen back into negative territory. Service providers were less satisfied with current business and reported lower expectations," the Ifo Institute highlighted.
