Turkish Students Shine at Global MasterMinds Olympiad in US

(MENAFN) Three Turkish students residing in the United States earned top honors on Saturday in mathematics, science, research, and innovation at the Global MasterMinds Olympiad, an international contest for middle and high school participants.

The Olympiad, which drew over 700 competitors worldwide, encourages experiential learning and problem-solving within STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines.

Selim Yavuz, a first-year high school student from North Haven, Connecticut, secured two first-place prizes in mathematics and research for his investigation into the impact of screen addiction on children’s health.

“Today, I received the reward for my intensive and determined efforts. I am very happy,” Yavuz told a news agency, adding that he prepared for the event over a six-month period.

Batuhan Alp Karaalp, also from Connecticut’s Northeastern region, earned second place in innovation with his solar-powered UV light disinfection device, which aims to stop the transmission of germs in mailboxes.

The 15-year-old expressed his aspiration to further advance the invention and eventually launch a business based on it.

Hamit Akca, a senior high school student from Connecticut, received third place in science for his spring-loaded, parachute-deployed rocket project, designed to reduce expenses in rocket systems.

“My spring-loaded system allows for reusable rockets and cost savings,” Akca explained, noting that most existing rocket technologies rely on carbon dioxide and explosive mechanisms that incur separate costs with every launch.
