Jerusalem Court Suspends Netanyahu’s Trial Sessions

(MENAFN) The Jerusalem District Court announced on Sunday the cancellation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled trial sessions for this week.

As reported by Israeli media, the court’s ruling followed a closed-door hearing initiated by Netanyahu’s request.

The session on Sunday included key security figures: Israeli army intelligence chief Shlomi Binder and Mossad Director David Barnea.

“In light of the explanations provided, which included substantial additions and changes compared to the information presented for previous decisions, we partially grant the request and cancel at this stage Mr. Netanyahu's testimony days scheduled for June 30 and July 2,” the judges declared.

Netanyahu had petitioned for a two-week postponement of his trial dates, a move that Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara denied, citing insufficient justification.

This court decision follows persistent calls from former US President Donald Trump demanding the trial be halted, labeling it a “witch hunt” against Netanyahu.

Facing serious accusations of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, Netanyahu risks imprisonment if found guilty.

His legal troubles began with interrogations in January related to Cases 1000, 2000, and 4000, all of which he denies. The attorney general formally indicted him on these charges in late November 2019.

Case 1000 centers on Netanyahu and his family allegedly receiving lavish gifts from affluent businessmen in exchange for favors.

Case 2000 involves purported negotiations with Arnon Mozes, aimed at securing favorable media coverage.

Case 4000, deemed the gravest, alleges that Netanyahu facilitated benefits to Shaul Elovitch, former owner of the news outlet Walla and telecom giant Bezeq, in return for positive media portrayal.

Netanyahu, whose trial commenced on May 24, 2020, is the first sitting Israeli prime minister in history to stand trial as a criminal defendant.

In addition to domestic charges, Netanyahu faces accusations of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for him and ex-Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in November 2024 over alleged atrocities in Gaza, where over 56,500 people—primarily women and children—have been killed since October 7, 2023.
