Flash Flood in Pakistan Leaves 12 Dead, One Missing
(MENAFN) Pakistani emergency teams on Sunday retrieved four additional bodies from the Swat River, pushing the confirmed death toll to 12 following a devastating flash flood that struck the country’s northwestern Swat district.
The disaster unfolded on Friday near Mingora, a city in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, when sudden floodwaters swept away more than a dozen individuals.
According to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmed Faizi, efforts to locate one missing person are ongoing.
“So far, Rescue 1122 teams recovered four dead bodies and one person is still missing,” Faizi stated.
Out of the estimated 16 people caught in the surging waters, three were successfully rescued. In a coordinated operation, authorities also evacuated approximately 80 stranded tourists from several riverfront areas.
The flash flood coincides with a perilous start to Pakistan’s monsoon season, which has already claimed at least 22 lives nationwide due to rain-related incidents over the past week.
Monsoon-triggered floods and torrential rains are a recurring threat in Pakistan, particularly affecting northern and northwestern regions, where infrastructure often struggles to withstand the seasonal onslaught.
