India, Russia Reaffirm Defense Ties
These talks unfolded during a bilateral encounter between Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and his Russian counterpart Andrey Belousov.
The meeting was held on Thursday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defense Ministers’ summit in Qingdao, China.
According to the statement from the Indian Defense Ministry, “It was one of the most important recent meetings between the leaders of the two nations, being held in the backdrop of Operation Sindoor and the consequent necessity of augmenting defense production, especially in critical items such as air defense, air-to-air missiles, modern capabilities, and upgrades of air platforms.”
The ministry further added that essential points of discussion included the “supply of S-400 systems, Su-30 MKI upgrades, and procurement of critical military hardware in expeditious timeframes.”
The codename “Operation Sindoor” refers to India’s airstrikes carried out on May 7 targeting suspected terrorist infrastructure in Pakistani-administered territory.
These strikes came as retaliation to a terrorist assault that took place in India’s Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory in April, resulting in the deaths of 26 civilians, many of whom were visitors.
The S-400 missile systems were instrumental in shielding Indian airbases and other defense establishments from Pakistani counterattacks, earning recognition from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
