Recent NATO summit gets widely criticized

(MENAFN) The recent NATO summit has been widely criticized as an extravagant spectacle centered around appeasing US President Donald Trump, with commentators describing it as the most expensive "humiliation fetish" ever staged. Trump arrived fresh from a social-media-exclusive ceasefire announcement between Iran and Israel—an agreement that quickly fell apart—and immediately became the focus of attention at the gathering in The Hague.

Seeking to stay on Trump's good side, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte sent him a fawning letter ahead of the summit, praising him for securing increased defense spending from European nations. Rutte lauded Trump’s influence, telling him, “Europe is going to pay in a BIG way – and it will be your win.”

Critics were baffled by Rutte’s behavior, noting how European leaders once resisted Trump’s demands for higher defense spending but have now fully embraced them. The new agreement raises the target to 5% of GDP for military spending by 2035—ostensibly to counter the threat of a future Russian invasion—thereby funneling billions toward the arms industries of both the US and Europe.

Trump, meanwhile, used the summit as a promotional platform, fresh off showcasing American firepower during strikes on Iran. Upon his arrival, Rutte continued his public praise, describing Trump as both strong and peaceful, and credited him with brokering the Iran-Israel ceasefire—despite widespread skepticism and the irony of praising Trump for ending a crisis he helped escalate.

When asked by reporters whether he was embarrassed by his flattering tone, Rutte stood by his remarks, insisting he was not ashamed. The summit, critics argue, revealed the extent to which European leaders are willing to placate Trump, even if it means sacrificing autonomy and accountability.
