Uganda’s Veteran Leader Signals 2026 Election Run
At 80 years old, Museveni stands as one of the globe’s longest-serving heads of state, having held power alongside his National Resistance Movement (NRM) party since 1986.
On Saturday, Museveni reflected on Uganda’s progress since 1986, describing it as five distinct development phases. He emphasized that the NRM’s current mission is to expand the nation’s economy to a staggering $500 billion in GDP within the next five years, sharing this update on X.
The president also called on newly elected NRM district chairs to uphold neutrality and steer clear of corrupt practices.
Addressing party members, Museveni stressed the importance of supporting leaders “who truly understand” the NRM’s core ideology and values, while cautioning against backing individuals “driven by personal agendas instead of focusing on the national interest.”
Since gaining independence in October 1962, Uganda has experienced turmoil, notably under the brutal eight-year rule of dictator Idi Amin.
Following Amin’s downfall, President Apollo Milton Obote assumed power in 1981. Museveni later accused Obote of electoral fraud, which triggered a guerrilla insurgency. After emerging victorious in 1986, Museveni ascended to the presidency.
