US Responds to Iranian Threats Against IAEA Chief

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has harshly criticized reported appeals from within Iran advocating the execution of Rafael Grossi, the leader of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

These remarks surfaced after an Iranian publication allegedly accused Grossi of conducting espionage on behalf of Israel.

The outlet implied that Grossi should face trial and capital punishment if he ever enters Iranian territory.

In a message posted on X this Saturday, Rubio declared, “Calls in Iran for the arrest and execution of IAEA Director General Grossi are unacceptable and should be condemned.”

He firmly stood by the nuclear agency’s ongoing responsibilities, stating, “We support the IAEA’s critical verification and monitoring efforts in Iran and commend the Director General and the IAEA for their dedication and professionalism. We call on Iran to ensure the safety and security of IAEA personnel.”

This diplomatic friction follows a recent vote in Iran’s parliament to halt collaboration with the UN’s atomic authority. In the aftermath of this legislative move, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi revealed that Grossi would no longer be allowed entry into the country.
