Russian Lawmakers Urge Wider Rollout of Autonomous Taxis
In a written appeal to Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Aleksey Nechayev, the head of the New People political party, along with Anton Tkachev, the first deputy chairperson of the State Duma’s committee on information policy, emphasized the “impressive results” already observed from pilot programs involving self-driving cars in various regions.
These areas include Moscow, Tatarstan, central Russia, and the southern coastal city of Sirius.
Referring to these promising outcomes, the letter encouraged Mishustin to “accelerate the expansion of testing zones in Moscow itself and implement a phased launch of autonomous transportation in other Russian cities that are highly prepared for the experiment.”
The officials advocated for a faster rollout of such technologies in areas demonstrating logistical readiness for this initiative.
The legislators maintained that implementing driverless taxis on a national scale could “quickly replace migrants with automated technologies and ensure a higher level of safety for citizens.”
They highlighted that in some urban areas, migrants account for between 10 percent and 40 percent of the taxi workforce.
The lawmakers also alleged that a significant portion of these individuals work without proper authorization or outside the bounds of labor regulations, which, according to them, compromises passenger security.
Furthermore, they warned that rising numbers of migrant drivers correlate with increased criminal activity within the taxi sector.
